Waltz With Bashir by Ari Folman
Waltz with Bashir, directed by Ari Folman, will be theatrically released in France, this Wednesday, 25th June.Presented in Competition at the Festival de Cannes last May, Waltz with Bashir created all the more surprise due to its unusual format: animated documentary. The Israeli director, a former Tsahal soldier, carries out in it his research between introspection and investigation on the Sabra and Chatila massacres in Lebanon in 1982.
Ari Folman in speaking of his film's genre: "The idea of the film had been on my mind for several years, but shooting it in 'real' images didn't suit me. What would that have produced? A forty-year-old interviewed over a black backdrop, telling stories a quarter of a century old, without any stock footage to illustrate his words. How boring! So, animation seemed to me the only solution, along with a good deal of imagination. War is so unreal, and memory so underhand, one might as well make this journey into memory accompanied by highly skilled graphic designers."
